S AM 06 – Balkanology Neue Architektur und urbane Phänomene in Südosteuropa / New architecture and urban phenomena in South Eastern Europe

With the decline of the People’s Republic of Yugoslavia and the demise of the socialist economic systems, extensive informal building activities constituting a novel form of urbanization began in the western Balkans. The resulting architectural and urban structures are characterized by trans-local influences and are accepted by large sections of society there. They are an expression of development patterns that provide pointers to future forms of urban living in Europe.
