Media Freedom Through Transnational Lenses: Insights from Montenegro and North Macedonia
In Montenegro, reforms have strengthened public broadcaster independence, transparency, and self-regulation, yet political influence, weak law enforcement, and foreign interference persist. In North Macedonia, reduced violence against journalists and legal progress are offset by disinformation, political and economic pressure, fragile regulation, and declining trust. Both countries, as EU accession candidates, offer critical insights into how media freedom and democratic resilience intersect with European integration.
This webinar was produced by OBC Transeuropa as part of the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), a Europe-wide mechanism which tracks, monitors, and responds to violations of press and media freedom in EU Member States and candidate countries.
