Save Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso

Almost 4,000 signatures have been collected in the last few days by the direct plea to President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Ugo Rossi, in support of the activities of Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso, threatened by a drastic downsizing

The news came last Friday, when the first meeting of a labour dispute on the future of Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso took place: on the table, the dismissal of a third of the employees , which would jeopardize a project built over the past 15 years.

The web immediately reacted with a plea to Mr Ugo Rossi, President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, and Ms Sara Ferrari, local Minister for university and research, youth policy, equal opportunities, and development cooperation. Signatures have never stopped coming in since.

The signatures are gathering the wide community that has enjoyed the activities and information services of Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso over the past years. Supporters include readers, diplomats, the writing collective Wu Ming, staff of 50 universities across the world, teachers, activists, representatives of associations from Trentino and the rest of Italy. And then journalists, from international and/or national papers like The Independent, The Economist, Frankfurter Allgemeine, La Repubblica, Il Giornale, Il Sole 24 ore.

"It is a wave, it just doesn’t stop. It is very heartening for us to receive such a warm support in these days, as it testifies the quality of the work carried out over the past years. One more reason to say to the Trento community that contributing to the creation of OBC is a source of pride and one reason to say that our autonomy โ€“ the ability to guarantee attention to the local context while looking at the outside world with responsibility โ€“ is appreciated everywhereโ€, commented scientific director Luisa Chiodi.

OBC readers and supporters immediately circulated the plea on social networks, especially Facebook and Twitter, with the hashtag #SaveOBC. What is happening highlights the role of OBC as an excellence of the Trento territory, able to grasp and communicate at the national and international level realities and processes that are fundamental to understand today’s enlarged Europe.

โ€œIn these years Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso has informed us with authority and accuracy on the transformations of areas crucial for Europe’s destiny. It would be a great loss if the Province of Trento downsized its activitiesโ€, commented Beppe Caccia, a reader and political researcher. โ€œWithout Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso silence would fall on half of Europeโ€, wrote Marco Rossi on Facebook.

For the Facebook community, โ€œOBC has long been carrying out outstanding research and information workโ€, โ€œan indispensable voice on regions ignored by the Italian mediaโ€, โ€œa free, independent project which does true information [โ€ฆ] in a historical period when conflicts can only be avoided through knowledgeโ€.

There are those who expect answers from local politics. โ€œThis is bad news and in Rovereto nobody talks about itโ€, writes Emilia Campagna. โ€œSure, the importance of Osservatorio goes well beyond the town, but this jewel of journalism does have its base in Rovereto โ€“ candidates, not a word on the imminent closure of OBC?โ€.

Twitter features shorter, but equally heartfelt messages. โ€œ@BalcaniCaucaso is one of the reasons many admire @ProvinciaTrento @UgoGma Don’t cut it!โ€ commented Simonetta Di Zanutto, while Livia Liberatore invites to sign the plea and wonders โ€œI don’t know how I could do without one of the best sites on #Balcani and #Caucaso.โ€ The comment by Matteo_T reads โ€œClosing @BalcaniCaucaso would be a terrible loss for the whole communityโ€.

Finally, a heartfelt plea came from the on-line magazine East Journal, that says that the fate of OBC is a litmus test for what Italian politics intends doing to support the information sector in its huge crisis: โ€œWhen a voice is silenced, even for legitimate political or financial decisions, it is always a bad sign. It is a sign that institutions do not believe in quality information, do not believe that information can be of service to citizens and contribute to the country’s democratic growthโ€.
